Given the not-so-shocking news that Xanga’s shutting down in two weeks, I am moving to Google+. Actually, I lie. I’ve been there for quite some time, and it’s been my primary blog for about as long. However, Xanga always had a special place in my heart, and that’s why I’ve kept it as my primary photo repository for nearly ten years! I guess my 10th anniversary will never come, but here’s to the good times, Xanga!

  • Nice photo to go with this entry.

Maybe Xanga will survive… but I guess it won’t be anything like what we’ve had if we don’t have the free bloggers around.

    You’ll be missed!

  • @XtremePsionic -  Exactly. To loosely paraphrase what you wrote in your post, a social network is nothing without the social. A community is nothing without the community.

  • I didn’t know that you’ve been here that long!
I have you on my FB so I’m good. ;) But still, I’ll be missing this place so much.

  • @I_love_Burma -  Indeed. We’ll still be able to see each other’s photography, so ‘sall good. But oh my. SO many memories on this place. But holding on to here just because of the past is like keeping friendships based on equity rather than what they mean at present. And yeap, I’ve been here for quite some time. I came here back on 11/8/03, originally because a few of my friends from back in Cali wanted me to blog while I was over here on the east coast during my sophomore year at Johns Hopkins. :) Why’d you originally register?

@happyobligations -  But it’s for the better. Plus, Google+ (seewatididthar) is much better for photo blogging and finding community.

  • how do you like google+ as a blogging site? i’ve never looked at it that way; most of my activity happens on fb (i haven’t figured out how i’m using google+ yet) but i like to keep blogging and fb separate; for me it gives the blog a bit more focus (not that i focus much, or at least lately). anyway, yes, i completely agree with your sentiment about friendships in relation to xanga [possibly, likely] shutting down. i’m a bit drained for words for the moment but i can at least say that i do agree wholeheartedly. if we don’t see each other around on xanga, see you around somehow! it’s been a good time, definitely.

  • @Yohannis - So far, I’ve liked it quite a bit. There are quite a few really, really, really good photographers there. And while I haven’t joined any photo communities there, I feel that it’s probably my best option to keep some kind of discovery/community aspect along with having just another place to store my photos. Plus, since I already store all of my photos on Picasa anyway, it’s a natural transition for me. :) In any case, regardless of where you end up finding your new home, you’re going to have to share the link with me so I can keep up with your latest pics and musings. :)

  • @justpixels – good point. and i’ll have to harass you about pilot certificate training when the time comes! i don’t know where i’ll move yet but something tells me if xanga really is going to fold, i’d like my current last entry to be the last one. perhaps blogging on google+ might give me enough of an excuse to be active there…or i wonder if blogger integrates with google+…i would assume so. anyway, i should probably click on that link to add.

  • @justpixels - i do mostly text blogging, so the timeline snapshot style on g+ doesn’t suit me as well

  • Ahh I did not see this til now :”(

  • There’s still six weeks to see what ultimately happens with this place …

  • @n_e_i_l - Whoops! I guess I misread it. I thought it said June, not July 15th! That said, the hell if I’m paying to blog. :P

  • @justpixels - I’m pretty much with you there, it’s a really bad idea.
